CORE STAFF POSITIONS - ALL SUMMER

Brave Trails is excited to offer the opportunity to have a paid dedicated core staff to join us all summer in the magical mountains of California. The core staff will embark on a very magical experience as we work together all summer to empower LGBTQ+ youth and build an even stronger unicorn community. Folks applying to join us on this adventure must commit to living onsite for the full duration of June 8th - August 5th, 2024. Core staff will be paid for every working day and provided days off throughout the summer. As part of our core team, staff will be provided housing onsite for the full summer and receive 3 delicious meals every working day!

  • The Head Counselor will work alongside the team of Directors to ensure the well-being, moral management, and supervision of all cabin staff. The Head Counselor will act as liaison between the cabin staff and the Directors, creating a culture of open communication and constant support. This position is open to returning Brave Trails staff members who have served for 2 or more years.

  • Camp Brave Trails has 3-4 medical staff (MD, RN, LPN, EMT) on site at all times. The medical team provides basic medical needs to our campers & staff throughout our camp sessions. The Medical Lead will join us all summer and oversee the operations of the medical team throughout the summer, working with a different group of professionals each session. This team will work together with your guidance to provide our campers quality care which is critical to the success of our programming. Applicant must have an RN License in California.

ONE SESSION POSITIONS - 12 DAYS

Brave Trails session based staff/volunteers join us up in the magical mountains for a 12 day commitment, 2 and a half days of staff training and 9 days of camp. Staff may pick from any of our available sessions throughout the summer.

Pay & Volunteer Structure

  • Paid Staff: Paid specialty staff members include Head Counselor, Medical, Inclusion, Community Restoration, & Anti-Racism Educator. Specific pay details and candidate requirements are included in job descriptions below.

  • Volunteer Staff: All other staff are considered volunteer staff. As part of our volunteer team, staff will be provided $200 travel assistance, housing for the full commitment, and delicious meals throughout the session.

  • POC Financial Assistance: Our POC (People of Color) Financial Assistance program was created to combat systematic and economic injustice that disproportionately affects communities of color and can be a barrier to participating in unpaid, long term volunteer opportunities. Staff who request these funds on their application will receive an additional $200 of assistance to volunteer.

  • Session 2: June 26th - July 7th, 2024 (includes training)

  • Session 3: July 10th - 21st, 2024 (includes training)

  • Session 4: July 24th - Aug 5th, 2024 (includes training + end of summer clean up)

  • The Inclusion team is our version of a camp mental health team. The reason we call you the Inclusion Team is because your job is not to provide therapy for our campers, your job is to have "curbside" therapeutic conversations, with the goal of getting campers back into programming.   • The Community Restoration Specialist will oversee our behavior management and restorative justice practices at camp. Their role will be to coach cabin counselors on how to handle challenging behaviors that arise at camp. In addition, this individual will facilitate high level restorative justice circles.   • The Build On Program Lead is responsible for designing and facilitating youth appropriate and empowering lessons throughout each session that will develop into a showcase.   • The Floating Counselor will be an "on-call"/back-up counselor who will jump into a cabin if a counselor is unable to finish their session (i.e. gets sick, has a family emergency, etc.). This role is an extremely valuable role at camp because your job is to ensure our cabin counselors are given support while also providing a warm environment for campers camp-wide. This position will require a lot of patience and flexibility as you will be working with a variety of staff and have a lot of camper interactions. The ideal candidate will have past camp experience at Brave Trails as a cabin counselor.
